Animal Behavior: Flying Back to Front
نویسندگان
چکیده
To avoid collisions, flies steer away from expanding visual scenes generated during straight flight: so how do they fly forward when no collision is imminent? A new study shows that wind compensates for this aversion, allowing flies to forge ahead.

Central complex neurons exhibit behaviorally gated responses to visual motion in Drosophila.
Sensory systems provide abundant information about the environment surrounding an animal, but only a small fraction of that information is relevant for any given task. One example of this requirement for context-dependent filtering of a sensory stream is the role that optic flow plays in guiding locomotion. Flying animals, which do not have access to a direct measure of ground speed, rely on op...

Front row burden is one of the key parameter to improve the bench blasting results. Improper design of the front row burden can create nuisances in the form of ground vibration, flyrock, back break or it may responsible for breakage of improper fragment size from the rockmass. Therefore, front row burden need to be optimised on the basis of proper scientific assessment. It has been proved that ...
متن کاملBinocular Interactions Underlying the Classic Optomotor Responses of Flying Flies
In response to imposed course deviations, the optomotor reactions of animals reduce motion blur and facilitate the maintenance of stable body posture. In flies, many anatomical and electrophysiological studies suggest that disparate motion cues stimulating the left and right eyes are not processed in isolation but rather are integrated in the brain to produce a cohesive panoramic percept. To in...
متن کاملAuditory Representations of Speech Sounds in a Neural Model: the Role of Peripheral Processing
The categorization of speech sounds by the auditory system has been a subject of intense attention over several decades, reflecting its importance to the scientific study of speech perception and the technological development of more human-like capabilities in automatic speech recognition. In previous work, we have firmly established that a two-stage computational model can mimic important aspe...

When flying in pairs, pigeons with different preferred paths back to the loft often agree on a joint route, and in doing so get home faster than either would have done on its own.
